My Husband’s Health Tips

My husband has always been naturally thin. He struggled with keeping muscle mass on when he was younger, and he’s had abs since he was a child. Is he just one of the lucky ones? Yes, and no. Within the first year of dating I noticed he had some healthy habits that he innately followed.

Don’t eat mindlessly.

No snacking at the movies, while watching TV or at his desk. He doesn’t like the sound of people chewing. When we watch a movie together there is a strict no eating policy. This habit keeps him from eating mindlessly. When he eats, it’s just him and his grub.

Hey! Who ate all the chips? Oh, that was me.

Don’t drink your calories.

He drinks a lot of green tea (no milk or sugar), water, and sparkling water. He’ll treat himself to a beer, cocktail or a diet coke on the weekends.

Watch your sugar intake.

I have a sweet tooth big enough for the both of us. He’d rather eat sushi than a cupcake. I think he’s an alien.

He doesn’t indulge in office meeting donuts. He’ll never put his hands in the candy jar at the front desk. “There’s too much sugar and germs.” He’s right. If he’s craving something sweet he’ll grab fruit. When we go out to eat he’ll take a bite of my dessert if I get one.

Watching this one thing helps cut down on the overall amount of processed foods. A diet high in processed foods is on average 500 calories more compared to a minimally processed diet.

Stay consistent with your workout schedule.

He is insanely consistent with his workout schedule. He is at the gym 4x a week rain or shine. Even if it’s just a quick 20 minutes.

Prioritize sleep.

Sleep is an important modulator of neuroendocrine function and glucose metabolism. Poor sleep loss has been shown to result in decreased glucose tolerance and increased appetite. There is an association between sleep loss and increased risk of obesity.

He takes one supplement on a regular basis. His sleep support supplement. He doesn’t feel an ounce of guilt when he takes a midday nap, something I struggle with. On the weekends he treasures sleeping in. He’s my sleeping beauty.
